Burundi is a tiny country that takes its coffee seriously. The main growing areas are Kayanza, Ngozi, and Muyinga in the country’s north and east, with smallholder farmers delivering cherry to cooperative washing stations the same way their Rwandan neighbours do. The altitudes — 1,400 to 1,900 metres — and the varieties — mostly Bourbon — produce a cup profile that runs parallel to Rwanda’s.
Expect red fruit, stone fruit, citrus, and a clean, light body. Washed lots dominate, though naturals are appearing from stations experimenting with the process. Burundi’s specialty reputation has grown steadily over the past decade, and the top lots now compete with anything from the wider Great Lakes region.
The supply is small and the prices are rising. That’s usually a sign that the quality is worth the attention.
