Ecuador makes less coffee than its neighbours and spends more on it per producer. The top specialty lots come from Loja, Pichincha, and Imbabura, with altitudes pushing past 2,000 metres on farms small enough to be managed by a single family. The country also produces one of the region’s more interesting selections of Typica Mejorado, a varietal that shows up in serious specialty catalogues.
The cup profile skews clean and complex — tropical fruit, jasmine, citrus, sometimes a distinct cane-sugar sweetness. Processing is mostly washed, though naturals and experimental ferments are gaining ground among the producers chasing the specialty top end.
Expect to pay more. Expect to taste why.
