Maruyama Coffee was founded in 1991 in Karuizawa by Kentaro Maruyama, who spent the following decade experimenting with home-roasting techniques before shifting focus to sourcing beans directly from farms starting in 2001. The company's baristas won five consecutive Japan Barista Championships from 2009, and Hidenori Izaki took the 2014 World Barista Championship title using Maruyama coffee.
