Counter Culture was founded in 1995 in Durham, North Carolina by Brett Smith and Fred Houk, beginning as a wholesale-only roaster supplying independent cafés across the South. The company published the first sustainability transparency report in specialty coffee in 2008 and operates Training Centers in 12 US cities. The roastery on East Pettigrew Street remains the production hub for blends like Forty-Six and Big Trouble plus a constantly rotating seasonal single-origin lineup. The brand has won the Sustainability Award at the SCA Expo multiple times.
