Doi Chaang Coffee Original Co. was established in 2003 by Panachai Pisailert and Wicha Phromyong in Doi Chaang village, Chiang Rai, on land where opium cultivation was replaced by coffee under a 1969 royal initiative. In 2006-07, Canadian businessman John Darch partnered with the Akha hill-tribe farmers to form the Beyond Fair Trade cooperative model, giving farmers full ownership of production and a 50% stake in the international Doi Chaang Coffee Company.
