George Howell Coffee was founded in 2004 in Acton, Massachusetts by George Howell, who had previously built and sold The Coffee Connection (acquired by Starbucks in 1994) and co-created the Cup of Excellence competition that revolutionized green coffee sourcing. The Acton roastery and Boston cafés focus on terroir-driven, lightly developed single origins from Cup of Excellence-winning producers in Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Colombia. Howell himself is a James Beard Award winner and one of the most influential figures in American specialty coffee history.
