Intelligentsia was founded in 1995 by Doug Zell and Emily Mange on Broadway Avenue in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, and is one of the three original American third-wave roasters. The company pioneered the Direct Trade sourcing model in 2003 and operates roasting works in Chicago and Los Angeles plus coffeebars across Chicago, LA, New York, Boston and San Francisco. Signature offerings include the Black Cat espresso, Frequency, House blend, and a deep seasonal single-origin programme led by long-running Kenyan and Colombian relationships.
