Baroida Estate — Papua New Guinea Origin Papua New Guinea remains one of the more singular origins in the specialty coffee world. The Eastern Highlands, with their mineral-rich water, produce coffees that are immediately distinctive in the cup. The country’s coffee industry is largely made up of smallholders, which makes estates like Baroida all the more remarkable: a rare example of consistent, traceable quality from a single farm across consecutive harvests. Project Baroida Estate was founded in the 1960s by Ben Colbran, one of the first farmers in the Eastern Highlands to pioneer coffee cultivation in the region. After Ben sold the farm in 1971, his son Nichol, who had lived on the estate since moving to PNG at age six, chose to stay on and manage it under its new owners. In 1997, Nichol purchased the farm back and remains its owner and operator to this day. Beyond their own production, the Colbran family works with neighbouring farmers to offer processing and marketing support, sharing their expertise and renown. The family has also been instrumental in improving local infrastructure, funding the construction of bridges, roads, and a local school. Coffee Roasted for espresso, this coffee reveals a bright and rounded profile, with notes of orange, milk chocolate, and salted caramel. The mineral-heavy water of the valley lends a distinctive body and texture in the cup, for an espresso that is warm, indulgent, and well-structured. This is the fifth consecutive harvest we have bought this coffee, and our excitement never fades.
