Coffee
China - Gui Ben
15 GBP
Often renowned for their speciality tea growing pedigree, we've made a foray in to the Yunnan province of China for our first plunge in their speciality coffee scene. We've seen the asian coffee scene explode in the last ten years; with more and more speciality coffee roasters in the UK taking a punt on these incredible origins, not often sold in the UK, especially not in Cumbria when they first hit the speciality market, and now, a commonplace sight - but for us, a small batch roastery in only our third year, we've been yet to find a place for our first Chinese offering; until now. We've sourced Gui Ben through our friends at Indochina (whom we've worked with to bring you offerings like our long time offering A Lel Chaung) and specifically from farmers Tang Xiang and Tian Cai. The washing station at Gui Ben often produces a mixture of processing methods, washed, honey or natural - we've decided to go for a complex and full-bodied natural process. The production of this coffee is spearheaded by Tian Cai, who is the Farm Operations Manager for Yunnan Coffee Traders with his relative Mr Tang managing the farm on a day-to-day basis. They belong to a small group of farmer families in the region, with principal motivations for the production of specialty coffee specifically revolving around sustainable livelihoods for their families and those of the local smallholder farmers in the surrounding area as well as returning the land back to being more biodiverse, only using organic fertiliser and farming using regenerative methodology. Our specific selection, as a natural process is full of rich chocolate body, with mellow sweet citrus and juicy notes through the aftertaste, we think this is a cracking all-rounder but specifically very distinctive through a stove-top or espresso brewing methods.
